Who should I go with to apply for my dependent visas?

My husband got hired for a teaching job in August, and there was an administrative error on his new employer’s part that set us back several weeks from him receiving his visa, so he just got it last week. It sort of threw off our moving timeline. (I can give more detail if anyone feels that is relevant). Right now, I am still going through interviews, and the job market is scarce right now due to the time of year, so I am having to obtain the dependent’s visa for myself and our 5 y/o daughter while I continue to look for work in Japan. His employer is not one of the best agencies (it’s NOT Gaba thank god), but they did not want to initially help us file my COE/visa, and my husband kind of had to push them after several emails to do it. They told my husband last week “it is our first time doing this for a new hire, please bear with us. It might take about 2 months, we are hoping.”

Considering they messed up his visa in the first place, and do not sound confident they know what they are doing, should we still have them process my dependent/family stay visa? \*Or\* should I go with a personal scrivener friend of mine from social media? I’ve known him about 2 years, and I asked him for advice, he said his firm would be willing to help me process it and he sounded more confident their office could do it in 2 months or less. His office is asking for 110,000 yen total for filing/processing both mine and our daughter’s COE documents. I will include the link to his professional page. I understand that arriving with my husband at the same time in Tokyo is not feasible at this point, but I really want to avoid going over 2 months. Thank you for any insight you could provide.

  2. *but they did not want to initially help us file my COE/visa*

Unless it’s a big company or something, they normally won’t/no obligation to apply for spouse/children BUT most will assist with provide documentation for COE application as Dependent visa is your spouse responsibility. Company just need to provide supporting documentations and it is for your spouse to apply for COE dependent visa when he is in Japan.

And application for COE is free, maybe few yennies here and there for miscellaneous stuff like returned letter, copies of documents from cityhall(Japan) etc. Mostly just time consuming.

    Standard answer is 3 months..
