Year to live abroad – Seoul or Tokyo?

Realizing I may get biased answers in this subreddit, but…

I have a year to live and study abroad. I’m deciding between Seoul and Tokyo and am wondering if anyone in this thread whose lived in both places has any thoughts on which one is more fun/interesting for someone in their early 20s?

No obligations or preferences for either place (they are both already my top choices!) and I’ll be studying either Korean or Japan as part of my curriculum depending on where I go. Thank you!

  2. I’m wondering – why Mega Cities though? They are quite expensive, affordable flats are tiny and there are masses of people. Might be an unpopular opinion but if you really want to connect with the culture and the people in one of those countries, I would suggest not to move to the biggest city there is. And if you want to go to Korea or Japan is up to you. Maybe travel there first for one week each? They are easily reachable from one another, so you could start with 1 week in Korea and then fly over to Japan for 1 week to get an idea of what those two are like.

  3. I have only studied/lived in Tokyo (for a few months) and I have visited Seoul before for a few weeks as a tourist. I admit I am very biased as I like Tokyo/Japan more (and have visited there more).

Personally I think Tokyo is a great place for students and has a lot of things to do, it’s dynamic, busy, and every corner of the city will have something interesting. I think Tokyo has a great balance of day time activities and nightlife.
