Hello all,
Just wondering if any Irish residents here in Japan recently renewed their passport online and if so how were you able to successfully submit an acceptable digital photo? Have used the KI-RE-I photo booth app and also tried having my photo taken using my iPhone but all photo attempts / uploads so far have been rejected. Any advice / suggestions on this one would be appreciated.

What are the requirements? Do the machines here meet the requirements? I don’t know about Ireland but Canada is pretty strict and the dimensions of the photos from photo machines here don’t match Canada’s requirements, so I always have to get my photo done at a photo studio and request the specific requirements from them. I have never done it online but I believe photo studios can give you digital data as well? Maybe somebody else can provide more info though
Renewed mine a year ago. I didn’t use a photo booth here as from memory they only accept them from Irish ones so I had to try with my other half taking my picture for me (you will need someone to take it for you or mount the phone on a tripod or similar from a distance greater than arms-length to you)
I had actually done this for my mother back in Ireland just a few months prior and I must have been lucky as that was accepted not a bother but for me now having to do it on the other side of the world? Not a chance, it was failing every single time! I think it was because of the background being off-brown color, even though it wasn’t a pattern or because a slight shadow was being cast – they are extremely strict on these things it seems. In the end I got some A3 white sheets of paper and taped them (overlapped slightly and tape-side to the wall) Then hung that up behind me, and with uniform light in the room (I am in a south facing house so used natural daylight) it finally worked and was accepted. Got the renewed passport within 2 months.
Good luck!
Not Irish, but for my (different European country) passport renewal I managed to get a photo from the local cheapo photo booth accepted; can’t remember the name of the company but it was 700 yen for 4. I think I scanned the photos using a desktop scanner. I certainly did not crop the imported picture to the correct proportions, or adjust the contrast slightly, because you’re not supposed to do that.
The 1000 yen ones from the local not-so-cheapo photobooth were not good enough (wrong background color IIRC), and trying to get someone to manually take a picture was hopeless.
I had to get a British passport for my son and our photo kept getting rejected too. We even took it with a really high quality camera and it didn’t work. The eventually just went to Kitamura and got some professional ones taken.
