If they have a receipt from sending it, I think the tracking is shown on it. The sender *may* be able to go back to the exact same post office where it was sent from, tell them the approximate sending time, and they *may* be able to pull the receipt from history and find the tracking number.
If they paid with cashless / apple pay the location + name of post office should be on the billing details.
Post Office offers many kinds of packages. You have to be specific. But the most common one is Yu-Pack.
If the sender does not know number, she has to go the post office where she brought Yu-Pack, tell everything like her name, etc, and they will tell her the number.
You’re in Japan, right? Domestic mail only takes a day or two.
