Bringing honey / beeswax products back to Japan as souvenirs

The rules around this seem kind of hazy.

I’m in my home country and received a jar of processed honey from my mother to bring back to Japan, and bought some beeswax soap (with a very small % of beeswax and honey) from a shop I like.

It only then occurred to me that some countries consider honey / beeswax to be animal products subject to import restrictions and Japan might be one of them… As always, every official website seems to suggest something different.

Just wondered if anyone has ever encountered difficulties bringing honey / beeswax goods back to Japan as souvenirs or for personal use?

  1. So, I think processed honey would be considered ok, if going by this link:
https://www.au.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_en/visa_quarantine_en.html (but idk where you’re from)
But I don’t know for a fact that honey would be in the “doesn’t require inspection” category.
For what it’s worth I’ve bought honey from iherb and had it shipped to Japan/recieved it.

Sorry it’s not a great answer.

  2. This year in June i brought back honey 1kg from Europe and I asked once i arrived at Haneda if it’s ok to enter the country with it. They said it was fine. Best to declare it than to try and hide it. Idk about the beeswax. Bring it and ask when you arrive.

  3. Just make sure to put the honey in checked-in baggage (not cabin) — since it would probably be treated as “liquid” if in your carry-on bag, and you’d probably have to abandon it or go back and check it in.

  4. I’m an Australian beekeeper. I brought a load of raw honey from my hives in my own jars inside my luggage. No issues.

  5. No issues there. You can bring in up to 1kg of honey provided it is labelled in accordance with the law (so commercially bought honey will be fine).
