Renewing drivers license that is expired.

Hello all,

My license expired in September of this year but I am returning back soon. Does anyone know what I need to do to renew the license. Will I have to retake all the test again or can I just explain why I had to return back to home country and let it expire?

Any info can help! Thanks guys.

  1. As far as I know, you have to re-apply from scratch for new driver license as there is no extension of an expired license. This involves everything you had done the first time. But I wonder what color code of experience you get. Would be weird if that also starts from scratch.

  2. Luckily if you go within six months of your license expiring you can get it reinstated without having to take the written or practical exam. If you have an unavoidable reason (for example you were abroad or in the hospital) you can get reinstated without testing up to three years after it’s expired.

Your prefectures police should have some information about the policy but here is the Tokyo metropolitan police’s page about it.
