Repair laptop in Japan

Hi, I recently arrived in Japan on a 4 years PhD program in a university in Shiga.

I have serious issue with my laptop, specifically mechanical issue with the laptop fan bearing. The fan keep making painful jerking noises and it keeps getting worse. I don’t have the money to buy a new one.

I don’t know any computer shop in Shiga that could help me with my problem. Not helping with the language barrier (as I learned the hard way).

At the moment, I am thinking of going to Kyoto where there might be computer shops that can cater to foreigner.

My laptop is an Asus Tuf F15 Gaming laptop. I wanna try sending to service center but I heard they don’t cater to non-Japanese model.

Is there any other options I could consider?

  1. I’m not sure if this is for yours specifically (check the model), but if the part is busted, it would be way cheaper and easier to just buy a part like this and replace it yourself. https://www.ebay.com/itm/255996803789?hash=item3b9a993acd:g:gXIAAOSw6hdkAFJs&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAAwOGCDmN1ImiUJNbZ7fStzkACh0wOWekhFKH%2FgC13NP4viPbEzEUMnh%2FJmTsj%2BUSVHZfh7pUv4AkHGoON36ksXvFzhMFDimuuaZGmCvnskx%2BKz4NZVTLdXLDNQZJiMOqoi840UbS39n0AGZClw6LsF7fBUdUeuxdFjXYGT%2Bk6tyESnx96b70QjCcSk9tBYpbSrS4rhmnNMrFN1fc2evQCmMwCXcBeyokmUJfl4j7ig8PCB5ZZ9NAsVxHFQB7VLXPKlQ%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR9Ttm5vzYg Also good to check if there’s just a lot of dust in them, get an air spray can.

  2. Have you tried fixing it yourself? I presume it’s just held together with screws, and the fan ought to be relatively accessible once you get the bottom cover off.

  3. Fixing it yourself is the best option. I could fix it for you but you need to buy the new fan, and bring the laptop all the way down to osaka. It would take around 20 minutes

  4. I’d recommend just buying an external fan for your laptop. The higher end models are pretty good, although they are not cheap.

  5. Go to the asus webpage you can order it to be repaired, they will pick it up if you ask for a courier. It’s expensive. I had a problem and opened up my computer and fixed myself.

  6. Here in Osaka there are places that will fix it. Like others say… fixing it yourself sounds like the best course of action.

If you are passing by Osaka feel free to bring both the fan and PC and I can fix them up for you in a couple minutes 🙂

  7. Could you talk to ASUS in the country where you brought it from and see if they can work something out with ASUS Japan?

If they’re not interested in that, you should hopefully be able to get the part number/specification and then order the part from Amazon or similar. If you don’t want to try fixing it yourself, you could then try going to a local PC repair shop and get them to fix it with the part in hand.
