Moving to Japan for 7 months

Hi,

I’m planning to move to Japan for around 7 months.
I’m following my boyfriend that his doing an internship.

He might be granted a dormitory in the university hosting his internship but I’ll have to find my own place. I was wondering if you could recommend some websites to find a short term rent for a furnished apartment in Tokyo.

I also have few related questions :

– I’m planing ton bring my dog, are small dogs (Shiba Inu) easily accepted in such rent ?

– I might be doing remote work and thus spend a lot of time in the apartment, also with the dog and my boyfriend often visiting Ill need something bigger then a 15 m2, I was planing on a least 30 or 35. My budget for the rent is around 160 / 170k Yen / month, can that fit my research ?

– I’m currently working with my employer on finding a solution to keep me working for them during my trip. We thought about EOR services, that would grant me a working contract in Japan and a visa but if that solution fails I might just travel without visa, as an European tourist I’m allowed on the territory for 3months without visa . So my plan B was to move to Japan for 3 months leave the country for few weeks and come back for another 3months. But doing this I won’t have any visa, will that be a problem to find a rent ?

I might also ask for a working holiday visa. Anyone knows if it will be easy to find a job with this visa as a software developer ?

That’s a lot of questions but I hope you can answer some of them.

Thanks !

having a dog makes it significantly harder to find a place to rent, and the paperwork and hassle of bringing an animal (plus cost) for such a short time, really just isnt going to be worth it.

    >We thought about EOR services, that would grant me a working contract in Japan and a visa

I mean, this is possible yes – but these often carry chunky fees etc, like if your company is willing to go this route an potentially secure you a visa legally.. especially only for 6 months… they must REALLY want to keep you.

    >So my plan B was to move to Japan for 3 months leave the country for few weeks and come back for another 3months

It would be illegal for you to work though at all while doing this, so you would have to quit your job or take an extended break as working while on a designated tourist activities visa (which is what the visa waiver program grants you) is not one that permits work.

    >I might also ask for a working holiday visa

I mean this may make the most sense really, if your company is willing to let you be self employed for the 7 months, you can get this, work remotely for them, invoice them and then self file taxes in Japan, you’d likely want to hire an accountant etc but this is honestly a pretty simple route.

  3. > I might also ask for a working holiday visa.

From what it sounds like you are going to absolutely need a working holiday visa. The alternative (apart from the EOR) is a tourist visa waiver, which limits you to 90 days in Japan at a time (possibly up to 180 days within any 365-day period if you leave Japan after 90 days and come back) and forbids you from working while in Japan. In other words: Your plans are only possible with a working holiday visa. Make sure to check right now whether your country has a working holiday visa agreement with Japan, and what the conditions for that visa are.

    > I’m planing ton bring my dog, are small dogs (Shiba Inu) easily accepted in such rent ?

Is it really worth it to put your dog through all the stress of flying across the world twice for just a 7-month stay? I would seriously reconsider this.

    > I was wondering if you could recommend some websites to find a short term rent for a furnished apartment in Tokyo.

The term that you’ll want to use when using Google is “share house”. Those are usually furnished as far as I’m aware and allow for month-to-month leases. You’ll want to double check with any share house company whether they would be open to renting to tourists, and whether they even allow you to bring pets (if you’re still aiming to do so).

    > I might also ask for a working holiday visa. Anyone knows if it will be easy to find a job with this visa as a software developer ?

You’re not going to find a serious job on a working holiday visa. Almost no employers are going to bother hiring someone that will just leave within a year. You’d be limited to mostly doing unskilled labor, but even that can often require a modicum of Japanese proficiency.

Staying with your current employer would likely be the easiest. You could do this in two ways: You already identified EOR services, but those aren’t technically necessary in your case since you wouldn’t need visa sponsoring _if you have a working holiday visa_. So on a working holiday visa you could circumvent that step (and the significant monetary costs) entirely. I don’t think an EOR for just 7 months is realistic. You would instead need to become an independent contractor (so that your employer wouldn’t be liable for Japanese taxes and labor laws) and would still be liable for taxes in Japan. Make sure to consult with a tax professional in that case.
