How long to wait for applying passport after getting PR in Japan

Hi everyone, My father got his PR 2 months ago after living in Japan for 15 years. Now he is considering getting the Japanese passport (naturalisation) as he intends to live here and has a business.
How long he has to wait before he can apply for passport and should he go through a lawyer or apply himself.
Any help would be appreciated 😇 Thanks!

  1. Wait.. I’m sorry. You can’t get a passport with PR. You have to be japanese citizen to get a passport. Am I missing something?

  2. Could have done it after the 5th year already. Don’t take my word for it but naturalization is easier to pass than PR.

Reminder though he will have to forfeit any other citizenship he holds.

  3. Most people don’t go for naturalization, but from what I’ve read, it has much less stringent conditions than PR. He could get a Japanese passport after living for 5 continuous years in Japan

  4. Naturalization needs residence of 5 years only, but it should be continuous. So I guess he’s already qualified to apply (of course he has to meet other requirements).

The best thing he can do is to get naturalization consultation appointment at the legal affairs bureau 法務局 with jurisdiction of his residence.

Edit: forgot to mention that pr isn’t a requirement for naturalization.

    Good luck!

  5. I think there are no restrictions. consult with a lawyer and legal bureau officer for confirmation.

really depends on how much time he has. if he can do it by himself he can save on average 200k yen.

  6. If you’ve lived in Japan and had a job for the last 5 years, you qualify for naturalisation, PR is irrelevant (but eases your mind since you don’t have to apply for visa extension during the process).

You have to take an appointment with the legal bureau office, they will ask you a bunch of questions and give you a list of documents to get.

You can find online what documents they typically ask, but the short version would be birth/death/mariage certificate of every family member (parents, siblings, kids), proof of your other nationality (that should be it from your birth country). You have to translate everything but you can do it yourself (and if you aren’t rich do that, it will cost you a lot to ask someone to do it for all the documents you have).

From Japan yoou need a bunch of stuff but most can be obtained with a trip to the city hall and proper bookkeeping of your tax records. Most annoying was driving record I think.

  7. Naturalization has lower requirements than PR.

Not only that, the place that deals with it is completely different 法務局 handles naturalization and 入国管理局 handles PR.

He can apply immediately, there’s no requirement to get PR before applying for naturalization.
