I have subscribed to Ahamo Hikari. I have chosen not to rent their router, and rather buy one of my own. I like Synology products and wouldn’t mind trying one of their routers, specifically the [Rt6600ax](https://www.synology.com/en-global/products/RT6600ax).
The Docomo person at the phone told me to make sure I buy a router with an “OCN Virtual Connector”, and that I plug the router and the modem together the day they do a remote activation of my line, so that they will configure both the modem and the router remotely. While I’m experienced with configuring routers and with some home networking, I never heard of OCN before.
I went to see the [NTT official list of supported routers](https://www.ntt.com/content/dam/nttcom/hq/jp/business/services/network/internet-connect/ocn-business/option/v-access-ipoe/pdf/bocn_vc_router.pdf) and the Synology isn’t listed.
However, from the router details it seems to support ipv4 over ipv6, and it’s sold in Japan, so I wonder if it’s actually compatible, just not in the official list. From this [Synology KB documentation page](https://kb.synology.com/ja-jp/SRM/tutorial/How_do_I_set_up_a_DS_Lite_connection_on_Synology_Router_in_Japan) it appears it requires some manual setting to work with Docomo, enabling DS Lite, among other things. If that’s the case I wonder if Docomo will provide the necessary details to enter the configuration manually as shown in the KB page.
I searched through this subreddit and I think someone mentioned this router works with Docomo Hikari, but it’s older posts, and I don’t know if it’s also the case with the current offer with Ahamo / Docomo Hikari, or how big is the setup overhead, or if using a router from the official list will make things much easier (in which case I might go for one of the Asus ones…).

According to the wiki (r/japanlife/wiki/internet) OCN virtual connect is MAP-E, so your dslite instructions might not be applicable. you will also likely get no help if you start talking about MAP-E, AFTR addresses etc to support staff. if the docomo router was free i don’t see why you would reject it. just use it and then put this synology thing after it as an access point.
that said you could probably use it in pppoe mode with all the problems that brings (more info on the wiki).
tldr just use docomo equipment and your thing as wifi ap
I’m on Nuro these days, but my last two routers have been Synology. I’m currently using the WRX560.
Over the decades, I have used various Buffalo, NEC, Asus and Synology routers with various providers and I have never had a router not work. And I’ve never had three provider configure anything. These days it’s even easier.
As long as their little box is configured, it doesn’t really matter what you choose to connect to it afterwards.
