16 Days: Tokyo-Kanazawa-Shirakawago-Takayama-Kyoto-Osaka

Hi Everyone!

I’m travelling for the 2nd time to Japan for 16 days in early December (visited some of the key Kansai region cities last time – Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Kobe and Arima Onsen) but will be travelling with 60 y.o. parent who is visiting for the first time.

I have pulled together the itinerary below but have a few gaps / would like some advice on:
– whether the itinerary too rushed / not realistic; and
– ideas for day trips from Osaka / off the beaten path experiences – or whether we should be adding places earlier in our trip in Chubu / Kyoto.

We prefer a more leisurely pace of travel and cultural / historical / nature / onsen experiences and want to limit our visits to shrines / temples (we’ve selected the key ones in Kyoto, etc.).

I am trying not to repeat my first trip so have selected limited places in Osaka / Kyoto that I’d like to visit again – but am struggling with the fact that most of the places I want to go to in Osaka are best at night.

  1. Hi!

This is not meant to be rude.

I do not know the ages or activity levels of your parents, but I am a middle aged parent with a teen child and I find some of your days a little rushed.

First, I don’t know if you are just thinking of a different branch or the one you are thinking of has closed, but going by the store directory at Shibuya 109 there is no Starbucks there. Were you think of the famous ones that use to overlook Shibuya Scramble in the Tsutaya building (which is currently closed?)

I would personally add more time to Shinjuku gyoen and take away from Harajuku.

Your full day in Kanazawa seems rushed. The buses in Kanazawa are more pleasant than in Kyoto, but you are still either taking buses or walking everywhere and it just takes time.

I think day 8 in Takayama is also rushed. You can easily spend 2 hours just in Hida no Sato ignoring transport times. I found Hida no Sato a lot more appealing and compelling than Shirakawa Go.

I think Day 12 is a lot. Yes, I know Uji is not that large, but I still think it is a lot.

D13 I am unsure how you expect to have time for a day trip and to be back in time to go to the Market. I guess you could look into Sakai Knife Village?

D14 I’ve no idea what it is like in December, but you could think about visiting 48 Falls in Mie-ken? I don’t know if the onsen nearby allow day trippers. If your parents have issues with stairs you may want to skip it.

If you’ve not been you can go to Hikone Castle. Many people go to Himeji, but Hikone gets a lot fewer people. I went many years ago in January and it was still lovely as was the garden.

If you enjoy cheeze you could visit Spa World. I’ve gone multiple times with friends who live in Osaka.

D15 You are not going to Kobe Luminarie because it is being held in January 2024 and not in December 2023.

There are light ups in Osaka and there is a Kyoto Kameoka Luminarie out past Kameoka.

    Good luck!

  2. Dumb question, but you mention a parent but not once a kid, so is there actually a kid in tow or is the parent somehow decoupled from them?

I’m assuming the former, but its not made clear.

Anyway, not a bad itinerary, though not really my style. Pretty typical, from what I know, so if that’s what you want I’d say you’ve got a decent spread with just a bit of atypical peppered throughout. However, most of your time in Osaka seems to be spent traveling *out* of Osaka which is sorta odd I guess, you might want to consider cutting back on commitments in Kyoto due to the lines you should presume you’ll run into, and you should make sure you’re taking the level of snow in December in Takayama seriously because it **dumps** up there.

  3. That’s not a leisurely itinerary, at all. If you actually prefer this form of travel, I’d suggest dropping a destination or two and simplifying some of your days. Day 1, for instance, is very busy.
