Anti-depressant medication

Hi everyone!

I’m moving to Tokyo at the end of December 2023 for one year. I’m currently on an anti depressant drug and I’ve been taking it for over two years now. I’ve been reading up on medications in Japan and have now realized I cannot bring more than one month supply. Is there anyway around this? Is it possible for me to get the same drug once I’m in Tokyo at a reasonable price?

TIA
Any info would be super helpful as I’m super stressed out 😂😂

  2. You’d need to find a doctor here who can re-diagnose your condition and issue new prescriptions for it.

That’s assuming that the medication is available at all.

Fortunately prescription medication is covered by national insurance here so you’d only need to pay 30% of the cost (with a maximum amount you can pay, so anything over that is free). The government also negotiates and standardizes medication costs.

If you could specify the medication you’re taking we could check to see if it’s available here and how much it costs.

  3. My antidepressants are very affordable here (I have Japanese health insurance through my job). Much less than what I was paying in America… Just had to find a doctor here to continue prescribing it.

I don’t know the specifics of what your medication is, but I brought over 90 days worth when I moved. It just required an extra form for customs and some documentation. I don’t want to give specifics because it could be outdated by now, but it will all be on the MLHW site.
