Construction Shaking Apartment

For the past 6 months the apartment next to mine has been a construction site, they’ve now pulled down the building and are doing their thing with machines and etc.

However the noise is absolutely intense, trucks, diggers and the sound of pile-drivers/machines smashing things is all I can hear until they go home. Even over the top of my headphones when they’re maxed out.

The worst part is, the work they are doing keeps making my apartment shake like mini earthquakes, is this normal? It’s rattling things around my apartment and I can feel myself shaking even when I lay on my bed.

Like maybe the noise is unavoidable but the shaking is a bit concerning.

    Yes.

  2. Yes. Welcome to my world.

They’re building an 8 story apartment directly across the narrow street from my condo, (blocking my beautiful view of the historic Temple and tree lined hill, too) . After that’s done, another building is going to be built in a parking lot across the street from the new apartment (just a 1/2 block further away from my Condo). And to make matters worse the apartment building next to my building (literally 1 meter away) has been trying to get its tenants out so they can tear it down and get build a new hi-rise apartment. They’ve got most of the tenants out of the building save 2 or 3 units. I hope that the holdouts will stay for many more years to come.

When I renovated my Condo, I soundproofed my windows knowing that this was going to happen. It’s helped greatly with the noise, but not the vibrations. But if you don’t own your own condo, you probably won’t be able to. You’ll have to grin and bear it for the next 12-16 months.

  3. Yes that’s completely normal. They really have to dig deep into the ground to get the proper supports.

I want you to think about it a little bit. The ground is shaking – like a mini earthquake. And you’re worried about your apartment – that is built to withstand earthquakes?

If the building WASN’T shaking then you should be concerned. The movement is what keeps the building safe. For a new fear unlocked, look up some youtube vids of how much highrise buildings move during earthquakes.

Terrifying but part of the safety design.

  4. It sucks but it’s normal. Had than happen to us a few months ago. You survive it for a few weeks and then it’s over.
