I am in japan on a working holiday visa. My gf and i want to get married, and after a lot of research ive finally figured out which documents we need. These documents need to be translated and get apostilles. My question is whether the original, say my gfs koseki in japanese, also has to get an apostille, or just the translation needs one. Thank you, this is very hard for my brain ｽﾏﾇ

The paperwork stuff varies by city so you should absolutely go to city hall/ward office and get confirmation there. That being said I don’t think I have ever heard of Japan requiring an apostille for a Koseki (already in Japanese) to be submitted in Japan, for a marriage with a Japanese National
Are you asking if you need to submit your gf’s apostilled koseki to the Japanese authorities?
Then the answer is most likely no. And a translation wouldn’t be needed either.
Because you are mentioning translations, I’m assuming you are asking about submitting Japanese documents to your own country. In that case the koseki will need an apostille and the translation of the koseki will need to be certified by a translator recognised by your country.
I married another foreigner in Japan. We had to translate stuff, but we just did it ourselves. We didn’t need anything notarized for the Japanese government.
Hi! Getting married next year so I’m also into gathering documents right now, and I’ve learned that the whole process is different depending on your country so you might need to look on your country’s embassy website directly.
I don’t know where you’re from, but I’m French and the website had all the info I needed and I indeed need an apostille on my fiancé’s Koseki before having it translated (by a certified translator , which can be very pricey from what I’ve heard but that’s another story).
So the timeline should be your fiancée getting her Koseki, sending it to the Gaimusho to get the apostille and then getting it translated to send to your embassy.
