Going to Immigration to Inquire About PR Application Progress

I’m thinking of going to Immigration to ask about the progress of my Permanent Residence application.

It’s been over nine months since I applied, and I’ve heard nothing back. I heard from some people that it takes four to six months, but I’ve also heard from others that it could take a year.

Has anyone had any success by going to Immigration to ask about the progress of their PR application?

I wonder if it will even make a difference. Part of me wonders if the postcard was lost in the mail though, like maybe they sent it asking me to come in, but it never got to me. Then again, this is Japan, and things don’t get lost like that usually.

  1. It’s been 11mo for me and I just received a request for additional docs just last week. Best if you call them on the phone # on the receipt you received when you submitted your application.

  2. I once went to immigration to inquire after my normal visa renewal (closing in on the 2 month limit), and behold, the postcard had bounced as undeliverable and was waiting me at the immigration.

30 minutes later I had my renewed residence card with additional 3 years on it.

I don’t see a reason why this wouldn’t work the same with PR applications.

  3. Took around 5-6 months (may 2023- oct 2023, Osaka)for me and I applied for all family (me, wife and son born in Japan) gather all the papers by myself . They asked for more papers after one month and then silence.

  4. I called them last month when my application was 4 months in (phone number is on the paper you received). They said it was unusually busy and they’re still processing PR applications of January this year. I should expect that it takes 10 months. Seems that might be even longer since @apparition47 mentioned already 11 months passed for that person’s application.

  5. Immigration (Tokyo) told me last week that they are processing January applications at the moment so it is taking around 10 months

  6. They have a phone line specifically for people inquiring about stuff and it’ll be a million times faster.
