Can one study in a Japanese university while working if s/he is on SSW visa?

I am college student from a top university in SEA. My life goal is to work and live permanently in Japan. However, I still have 3 years to complete my degree in my home country and because of my scholarship, I am required to work here for 4 years after graduation before I could even be cleared to leave the country. I don’t want to do that because they pay here is horrible. I cannot imagine earning just around 40k yen per month for 4 whole years. Besides, since the degree that I’m working on is in the healthcare industry, my credentials won’t be acknowledged in Japan even if I get a license in my home country.

Hence, I am thinking of halting my studies to work in Japan first and earn money. Another reason for this is my younger sibling is also about to enter college and our mom is sick. As the eldest, I have to take on the responsibility of providing for our family since our dad is not in the picture.

My plan is to go for an SSW Visa (probably nursing care). Then once I’ve saved up enough, I would still like to get a degree by enrolling in a Japanese university. I understand that the chances of working in the healthcare industry in Japan as a foreigner is slim to none, so I might just choose a different degree. I just want to know if studying in a Japanese university is permitted if you are on SSW visa. I can’t really afford to go for the student visa pathway since relying on a part-time job alone won’t be enough for my expenses and to support my family back home.

My long-time boyfriend and fiancé is a Japanese national, so I would be eligible for a resident visa 3 years into our marriage. However, we plan to get married once he completes his degree, and right now, he still has 2 years left. This means I would have to wait for a couple of years before I could attend a Japanese university if doing so is prohibited for individuals on SSW visa.

I greatly appreciate your insights on the matter.

  2. Working visa Nursing care

This is the most powerful visa for foreigners engaging in caregiving in Japan, as it can lead to a permanent residence with unlimited renewal times, and family members can also stay in Japan under Dependent visa, and changing jobs in the industry is possible. As a working visa aiming at introducing high-talented foreign labor forces, Nursing care has the following quite high requirements to apply for:

・has obtained Qualification of Certified Care Worker

・has contracted employment with a care facility in Japan

・work duties should be providing care or care instructions

・be paid not less than their Japanese counterparts

The first condition is the most difficult part, as the qualification requires years of studying or working in the field. Currently there are two ways to approach.

・Studying at a school in Japan under Student visa for certain years, then obtain the qualification, change to Nursing Care visa

・Working at a care facility under other visa for certain years, then obtain the qualification, change to Nursing Care Here EPA Care Worker, Technical intern trainee are also included. Currently care worker under Specified skilled worker is not allowed to change to Nursing Care.
