Building a Japan inspired game!

Hey everyone, i don’t know if posts like this allowed since it techniqally goes under self-promotion, but i thought some of you might find this interesting.

I am currently build a game inspired by Japan and Samurai’s since i am Danish and Japan actually has a park dedicated to one of our famours storytellers “H.C Andersen” called Funabashi park.

Thought it was really cool plus most of my audience apprently is Japanese, that’s just really awesome

Anyway, the game takes place in a fictional town called Aluminescence heavily inspired by both Osaka and of cause Funabashi”the town”

You play as a samurai with guns who’s goal is to pretty much just get rid of the bad guys and save the world, pretty simple concept but kinda awesome.

Is their anyone who’s been to that part of Japan before? i would like to hear some stories to develop a bit of better understanding around the whole place since i am purely going by referances i can find online 😀

Anyways, hope this post is okay

the game is called SaiBorRai and is gonna be free for PC and potentially consoles in the future

  1. not trolling. Gotta say, good luck making a Japanese-centric game but with a seemingly superficial knowledge of it. Studying a lot of aspects would help a lot.

Is the game supposed to have anything to do with Andersen’s stories as well?
Not growing up in Japan and having a team of other creative people who really know the culture, history, legends/fables, etc. will really leave the game kind of hollow and lacking substance (in my opinion).

What do you specifically want info about? Do you want references about the city, geography, social aspects, history? Gotta be lots of good videos about all of that. If you cant visit in person, go around on google street view to get a sense of the city (you’ll never run out of new places to see).

Imagine an American making a Danish/Nordic-centric game. What kind of stuff would you want them to reference? What things might they miss about your culture that would make you feel let down?

  2. Since your story revolves a lot around Samurai I recommend you read the Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi. It revolves deeply around the tenants of Bushido and the principals and values of the Samurai. Along with that find maybe a Japanese history book in English and just read of the warring states period to get a general idea of the culture and time frame. Japan has 3 very distinct periods it has been through with very different cultural aspects: the feudal age, the imperial age, and the modern age. Each age has an almost entirely different culture however the Imperial and Modern take a lot from the Feudal and very little is taken from the Imperial for obvious reasons.

But other than that also consider watching some samurai movies too, I wouldn’t recommend Tom Cruise’s the Last Samurai but it can be used as a starting point to pick up small simply aspects of Bushido and the life of Samurai.
