Bed vs futon

I’m having a debate with my colleague.
Do most people in Japan sleep on beds or futons?

  1. From what I can tell (and please don’t take one random Redditor’s opinion as gospel), it seems to depend largely on:

    1) The house you’re living in, it’s size and style

    2) How rich you are/want to appear to be

Many bubble/city peeps (people in their 40s, 50s and 60s) have beds and European cars.
Many that don’t, (in my experience, which is an n of 1) have usually travelled/lived overseas and don’t necessarily feel they need to recreate a “western” style in their places, or they have more than one child, so maximising space/utility/cost means that futons and Kei cars are the go.

Seems like younger people (20s, 30s) usually go for whatever is cheaper and more convenient, mainly because wages suck, and they’re saving for things they want to do.

  2. The older you are, the harder it is to get down on the floor and get back up again. With the aging population in Japan, more of Japanese people are sleeping on beds. Also a modern thing with hardwood or carpeted rooms instead of tatami, which would have been futons. Futons are also more common for smaller spaces where your living space is your sleeping space as well, so young single adults.
