  1. Has anyone used a Paypal debit card in Japan? I have some Paypal balance in USD and I’m wondering if I could just use it like a normal credit card here. Would it convert USD to JPY at the current exchange rate and just function like a foreign credit card?

  2. My dad died recently and I’m now in the stage where I’m trying to get back into normal life, go out and see friends, etc, but I’m really struggling with how to deal with this topic when I see people I haven’t seen in a while when they ask me how I’ve been lately, or ask things like “how’s your family?” It doesn’t seem appropriate to start every conversation with “Hey, before we start catching up you should know that my dad died, just fyi” especially if they’re not super close friends and didn’t know about his illness in the first place. At the same time, I feel like I’m lying if I don’t mention it when people bring up family in conversation, which makes me feel bad. (Btw, this is in relation to conversations in both Japanese and English, not that it probably matters much)

I know this isn’t a Japan specific problem, but I’d be grateful if anyone had any advice about how to navigate this. Thanks.

  3. Can anyone please explain what this character in JP means on bill at a clinic. It is 点, it is showing as point in translation. So they calculate the points and multiply with a certain number to get the final bill amount? Is that number fixed?

  4. Does anyone have recommendations for a nice and warm down jacket for women that reaches to the knees? I’m extremely weak to the cold and yesterday in Tokyo was enough to get to me.. I only have one that’s 6 years old and definitely way past it’s end of life.

  5. Can I live in Japan without a valid passport ? Mine expires today and I haven’t renewed it yet.

I have a spouse visa (and Zairyu card) running for a long while, and I’m not planning on leaving Japan any time soon.

I’ll renew the passport asap too, but just want to be safe.

  6. I was a vocal lead in a band years ago, and I miss singing… Is there any way to find bands or music groups to join in?
