Montessori in Japan?

Hi everyone, long time lurker here, first time poster. Are there any Montessori teachers on this sub that can share their experience getting a job and working in a Japanese Montessori school?

I’m starting to apply to certification programs to get my M.Ed in ECE and a primary Montessori certification in the next 2-3 years, and I was wondering what my prospects might be in Japan.

  1. I do not know much about primary Montessori schools, but there are a number of pre-primary Montessori schools dotted about Kanto. If your Japanese is good enough to communicate in writing and speaking, you’ll likely be welcome to most of the schools.

  2. Montessori is actually pretty popular for ECE in Japan right now, I’ve worked at a couple international Montessori schools and my son attends a public Japanese Montessori, as well. You shouldn’t have trouble finding work, but definitely ask a lot of questions when interviewing. Many schools will call themselves “Montessori” but not really follow any of the essential practices. They’ll just have wooden toys.
