Hi! I recently accepted an offer in Japanese company and now in the process of changing visa. According to my employer, the visa could be ready around the middle of December, but the actual starting date would be early January. So, my question is, can I legally work part-time during this several week waiting period?
I’ve asked this question to the employer and to my language school, but they tell different things and I’m confused. My employer sad, that I can work part-time as long as I go to Japanese language School and have an “International Student” status (which seems logical). But they also sad that I should drop off school as soon as visa is ready (which I do not understand, since there seem to be no restrictions about going to school with working visa). My school said that I can continue studying with new visa, but my ability to do part-time job will depend on particular visa status (in my case it’s Engineer), but they do not know the rules.
So, can I work part-time after getting new visa, but before starting my job, while going to Japanese language school?

Yes, immigration only cares about how much you make and what you’re doing (that the work matches the visa class you’re in) not how long you have to work to do it. In general as long as you’re making more than (I think they lowered it to 200,000, it’ used to be 250,000 but the English teaching companies lobbied to get it lowered because slave wages and disposable workers) whatever amount they’re saying is the minimum now you’re fine.
The downside is you’ll normally be responsible for your pension/healthcare which is why they keep you just below the full time (on paper – be careful they don’t work you full time hours).
