I often see posts on here from people wanting to do language or business and engineering, but not really any research. So I’m curious to see if there’s anyone who has gone to Japan to conduct research for a university or at an institute like RIKEN.
I’m a young professional studying plant science, and if you know anything about plant science and genetics then you know Japan and Asia in general are big on that kind of research. Japan, being an island, also has some absolutely fascinating plant species that do some weird stuff (ever heard of heterotrophy?) Some research institutions list a variety of foreign and native scientists, usually big organizations, and smaller ones are Japan national dominated. What I don’t know and am hoping to gain a little more insight into is the desire for foreign researchers and what their work culture looks like. Are the big, diverse labs held in Japanese, English, or both? Do companies ever reach out for knowledgeable foreigners? Or is it more of a “send applications to any and all labs and hope that someone takes you”?

**Foreign scientists in Japan? Unheard of or no?**
