I don’t think immigration understood what I was saying when I was asking for certain forms

I searched the group and didn’t find exactly my situation.

I work for a tiny company that can legally employ me but can’t legally sponsor me. I work full time for them and do social media marketing and teaching (not English) for the same company. I asked (multiple times to be sure) and was told I just need the “Application for Permission to Engage in Activity other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted” and my contract, passport, residence card, and photos. Maybe it’s just my anxiety but i feel like I’m missing something.

For further info I have a “specialist in humanities/engineering visa” and I need to renew it.

Am I missing anything? Anyone else been in this situation?

  1. Wait, isn’t that application for people who want to engage in part-time work that isn’t covered by their current visa. i.e. student visa and they want to get a part-time job limited by 28 hours per week.

Logically it wouldn’t make sense to have your full time job using a part-time job visa, which might limit you to 28 hours per week.

It sounds like you are trying to self sponsor a visa or something.

  2. The company still needs to fill out the [sheets](https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/content/930004094.pdf) that are for the employer. You fill out the two sheets (For applicant, part1 and part 2) and the company fills out the two organization sheets (For organization, part 1 and part 2). [This](https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/content/001367009.pdf) is a checklist of what documents you need. Both files and additional info can be found [here](https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/applications/status/gijinkoku.html?hl=en).

    BTW it’s “Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services”

  3. I’m not sure of your situation but sounds like you’re renewing. You can’t renew with just the Special Permission. That’s like an addition to the visa you have that let’s you do work not covered by your visa type (e.g. if you were an office worker wanting to lecture at a university on weekends). It’s not a visa in and of itself. It expires whenever your current visa expires.

As others have said, you’ll need to go through the extension process for your SiH/E/IS visa. It sounds like you might be under a freelance arrangement with your employer? If you don’t have a contract, ask them to put together a simple freelance agreement (業務委託 in Japanese) in writing with their address, your salary, your hours and the work you, signed by both you and the company. Documents like that are super handy for making your case for renewal stronger if you’re self-sponsoring!

The company needs to fill out some info on the form for you all the same, as someone else said. Depending on what kind of company it is, you might have to submit copies of certificates from your employer(s) to prove they’re legit, especially if they are a pretty small organisation. Usually something with their 法人番号 (corporate number) or a similar business registration document and a recent tax record in some cases. The link another commenter shared above will probably have more information about the documents you’ll need from your employer— I find that it always helps to go through the list of documents with them so they’re clear about what they need to prepare for you.

You can do the Special Permission application at the same time as your renewal too— handy!
