Question about health insurance payment slips

Hello, I’m an international student at Waseda, and moved to Japan at the end of September. I received payment slips for the year, for health insurance after registering my residence in Shinjuku. The slips are each ¥5,840. I have no income aside from the money my parents send me. I was wondering if this was a mistake or if I actually have to pay this much per month for health insurance. Am I supposed to go to the city hall to rectify this/lower the amount? I am bad with bureaucracy so I’m sorry if this is a dumb question. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Health insurance is handled by your local city hall office. Stop by and ask the appropriate representative to review your situation.

I think you should only be paying around 1,200 to 2,000 yen per month. Not sure because I studied abroad for university.

  2. Take a trip to your ward office and ask. Worst case is you pay the 6,000 yen bill. Best case, it’s cheaper.

  3. Everyone who lives in Japan, including students, has to be enrolled in health insurance. You should do as others said and talk to city hall about it, but it’s normal to have to pay something

Though when I was a student (one semester at Kansai Gaidai and one at Nihon University), I never dealt with the paperwork myself, the school took care of all of that

  4. The amount is different by place. Tell me where you live and I can give you more accurate answer. If you are going to Waseda, you must live in Shinjuku or so.
