Ideas for a paved yard?

Hi Santa’s little helpers, some friends of mine are moving to Japan, and they leased a house with a paved yard, for 2\~4 years to start with, some place in Tokyo. They are kinda like expats and willing to pay me to help them set it up to be more… natural?

I was thinking, how pricey/realistic is it to buy a potted tree, like Japanese maple?

Alternatively, is there perhaps a service that would set up flower beds for them and come a few times a year to replant new flowers?

Maybe someone here has better ideas?

My Japanese is not great, yet infinitely better than theirs, so I’m happy to help for a small fee.

Thank y’all!

  1. If it’s in Tokyo, first thing to consider is how much sunlight the yard gets in a day.

Hardware/home centers are pretty decent, some have a good selection of potted plants, trees, ferns etc. You could buy a bunch of supplies, borrow the small home center kei truck and take it all home yourself. Some places even rent out things like jackhammers with shovel attachments, wacker packers etc to do some real landacaping.

But more importantly, they have to absolutely get permission from the owner of the property before they can do anything.

  2. They are probably moving to Hiro/Aoyama/Roppongi area? There’s a great garden centre in Minami Aoyama called Solso Park they can deliver and they do have mature plants. I’m pretty sure they can speak English given the clientele. Happy to consult further in the Minato area (ex landscaper living in Minato).
