  1. Does every locale in Japan need to have tourist spots now? I appreciate Fukuoka for what it is, a convenient city with great food and shopping.

  2. I don’t think Fukuoka needs to force itself to be like other places in the country. There seems to be plenty to offer as in my search I learned about yatai, the ferry boat to Busan and that there is a lot of food/shopping. The city shouldn’t force itself to be like other big tourist hubs, sometimes people want to relax away from places like that.

  3. It’s government policy. The central government has decided they’re going to revitalize regional cities through tourism. So every regional city has been scrambling to promote whatever tourism resources they have since well before the pandemic.

I actually just completed a translation of a tourism guide to Fukuoka and Kitakyushu this week.

  4. The big hubs are Tenjin station and Hakata station. There are a lot of activities to do at each stations each one is very different from each other.

Near Hakata station, the Nakasu Yatai Yokocho food stalls are gaining popularity. Canal City has gotten nicer over the years. That is a good tourist spot.

Favorite Mentaiko spot is Ganso Hakata Mentaiju 元祖博多めんたい重 near there. The ferry terminal and that special bridge that rotates out of the way is really cool to see in action: Fuku-Haku Deai Bridge 福博であい橋

Near Tenijin, Nagahama Fish Market has really great seafood. I found a spot that serves Fugu 3 different ways and very unique.

I visit Acros music hall almost every time i visit Fukuoka near Tenjin. Inside had beautifully architecture. On the outside, it is free to walk all the way up to the viewing platforms. It is a fun climb through the gardens.

Of course, the first Ichiran ramen and the headquarters is great to visit.

There are quite a few places that are unique to visit in Fukuoka. Not sure why they do not advertise better.

  5. its no surprise, nor does it matter

took me half a day to explore though if i were to eat all its offerings it would take a bit more

despite the lack of points of interest, fukuoka serves as a great base to explore neighboring regions like oita and nagasaki

  6. Anybody who hasn’t been to Kitakyushu, hasn’t been to Fukuoka. A must see for foreign tourists coming to Japan.

  7. I’d take a trip to Fukuoka over any trip to Kyoto or Tokyo any day. Not as crowded, easier to find good food. And it’s a great base to explore some parts of Kyushu.

It’s true that if you want to do “touristy things”, there’s not many things to do, but it’s easier to see how life really is outside the bigger cities, without losing the commodity of the big cities. Same as with Hiroshima btw.

  8. Yeah I´ve been to Fukuoka with my Japanese girlfriend. It´s one of the ugliest cities on this planet. ^^

  9. Visited last year in August (after a very long absence) and have to say the bus center at Hakata station was extremely confusing
