Can I ask for a price estimation at a Japanese hair salon?

Hello everyone!

I have been wanting to do a perm in Japan for a while now. I also need to recolor my roots and a full cut. I am not sure about every hair salons price though, because even with translation nothing is really precise T.T

(precisions : I have long hair, approx. breast length, wavy and damaged, permanent color)

In my country you can go first to the hair salon and ask for the full price before deciding if you want to schedule an appointment. Do you think it is possible in Japan or it would be seen as rude?

Thank you very much for your help!

  1. Most salons can be found on Hot Pepper Beauty. It’s a website for booking hair, nail, and other beauty treatment services. You can choose what you want done from the menu and book the appointment online. If you have long hair, you should add that option from the menu because it’s an extra fee, usually about ¥1,000. Then you’ll know the exact cost before the appointment.

  2. Every place I’ve gone to for a haircut has their prices posted. I assumed that was a standard practice.

  3. Yes, you can ask. Usually the prices for various services are on a printed ‘menu’. However, please be aware that if your hair texture is not similar to typical Japanese, some hairdressers will decline to perm your hair because standard perm solutions here are tailored for Japanese hair and it’s not always successful on other types. If this is the case for you, there are a number of hairdressing salons that specialise in non-Japanese clients.
