Who to call about removing roadkill?

Title says it all, who do I need to contact about removing roadkill in Japan? Living in Inaka, it’s always a tossup on whether something gets removed from the road/sidewalk or not (and sometimes I just do it myself).

But this morning, I saw something absolutely horrific and depressing on the sidewalk and want to do whatever I can to prevent seeing it again.

  1. Contact your local city, they’ll send someone over. We had to do it when one of the local feral kittens decided to crawl under our car and expire. Much sad. 🙁

  2. You can call #9910 (road emergency dial) if it’s on the road.

For future reference, when you find one in your property, try your local city office, but depending where you live they might refuse and you have to do it yourself.

  3. Depends on where you live. In some inaka areas, you can scoop it up and put it out with the rest of the namagomi. In other areas the city will send someone out for cleanup. Calling your city office would be the right first step.

  4. I asked my (Japanese) coworker this recently and he told me that koubans have the tools to dispose of dead animals

  5. In my city, roadkill is handled by the fire department. Call the non emergency line or the city line and they’ll scoop up the remains.
