So I’m taking the Shinkansen from Oita to Miyazaki. I tapped my ICOCA card at OITA station and I plan on tapping my card again at Miyazaki stationat the gates when I get off. However a fare inspector came by and I had nothing to show him but my IC Card. Does it work the same way as the buses or am I kinda fucked here?

Oita and Miyazaki are in different IC card area so you will not be able to touch out at Miyazaki. You will have to leave and pay (possibly with cash) at a manned gate at Miyazaki station.
Also it’s not a Shinkansen. It’s a limited express train.
Also find it weird that the conductor didn’t explain this to you when they were checking your ticket.
