Change of residence registration

I live in Tokyo. My share-house contract expires soon. I decided not to extend it and look for better options instead. But I think I started a little bit late and won’t be able to find a place to live before the contract expires. I have a brother whose place I can stay at for a while, but I am worried about how long I can live there without changing my address in the zairyuu card.

  1. My guess is 14 days, but you can just change it to your brother’s and change it again when you get your new place.

  2. As others have said, just change the address on the back. You never know about housing searches and a 2 week search can end up being 2 months. To which you might get into trouble.

There’s literally no downside from submitting your change of address aside from the bureaucracy.

  3. As legal rule, you have to change zyuminhyo within 14 days after moving to another place. But not everyone strictly keeps this rule.

But if you don’t change your address, you would not receive important letters on tax, insurance, etc. So it’s better to change it ASAP.

  4. If your brother is renting, what you (both) should be more concerned about is if his lease would allow you to crash for a period of time; or if is possible to get permission from his landlord to allow you to stay over.

  5. There are definitely people who get away with not changing it within 2 weeks. Though normally finding a place to stay shouldn’t take that long? Share house processes are more or less instant, and real estate apartments it’s literally “please move in within a month”. Like if you go on a Saturday you can just find a place day of.

Main thing is that without the change of address you can’t change your address at, like, your bank.
