I’m 26F from a latinamerican country, do not have a degree yet, and would like to live in Japan in the future. I know I’m dreaming, I know I’m delusional, so if someone with more worldly experience could guide me a bit, I’d appreciate it. I want to see if there’s even a sliver of a chance. My plan is the following:
* Get a degree in graphic design within 4 yrs. I’d be graduating at around 31. I’ve had some life issues up till now, hence the late beginning.
* Currently N4 and enrolled in a Japanese course; take University JPN classes to supplement my language studies and aim for N2 before/around the time I graduate.
* Apply for the MEXT master’s degree scholarship; even though chances are low, I’d have 2ish attempts before I’m too old (cutoff is 34-35).
I want to know if this is possible due to my age. Would a master’s in Japan facilitate getting a job afterwards? Would graphic design even be worth it, or should I strive for compsci (which I’m hesitating on because it’s notoriously difficult and might take more than 4 yrs). Is living in Japan at this age even worth it?
Otherwise, the other option I have is to marry my boyfriend who lives in California and visit Japan whenever I can, as a tourist. Ideally though, I would love to study something related to art, design or art history in this country. Japan is rich culturally and I’m fascinated by its traditional/contemporary art, mythology, and how beautiful it is – coming from a country like Mexico, which does not lack beauty in any fashion, but is full of corruption, violence & uncleanliness.
Big thanks to anyone who replies 🙂

**26F, is this a realistic plan or should I reconsider?**

I have zero experience so don’t trust me fully, however I do have some worthwhile things to say.
Before moving, travel there for a bit. Be a tourist, have fun, see what they have to offer.
Get familiar with the laws, legal system, and government. It’s usually overlooked, but trust, very important
Learn Japanese. If you haven’t already, I recommend learnjapanese.moe, however do what you please.
This is optional, but plan ahead. Find out where you want to work, then if you’re hired, find a place near your work to stay, all before moving. Again, it’s optional, but it’s nice.
You honestly have more than enough time and I think if that’s what you truly want you should pursue it! Definitely make a trip there, longer than a few weeks, whenever you have a chance so you can get a feel of how it is. I would also say, have a plan of action for what you want to do when in Japan with multiple back up options worse case scenario. Worse case scenario you have a college degree and can make yearly trips to Japan
Start looking for jobs now as if you have your qualifications already, and you should know what’s available. Hopefully you’re not thinking of just coming to Japan without securing a job first.
