I got married in the Philippines but I’m holding both PH passport and Japan Passport

Hi, I recently got married in the Philippines. I have a dual passport since birth (Japan and Philippines). When I got married, I put in all of my documents that I’m a Filipino citizen and did not announce that I’m also a Japanese citizen. However, my wife and I are planning to go to Japan and I do not know what to do.

Should I use the “dont ask, dont tell” method and just proceed with going to Japan as a Japanese citizen even though I got married as a Filipino citizen already? Or should I just use my PH Passport and get a visa instead like my wife?

Will they find out I got married in the philippines as a filipino citizen? Should I check “single” in the forms as I travel to Japan?

How about my wife? Will she check “single” or check “married” in her forms? Will this affect her IO interview on the way to Japan as well?

Will this all affect our marriage and its legality/validity?\\

THANK YOU!

  2. What do you mean when you say you got married “as a Filipino citizen”? Are your legal names in the Philippines and Japan very different? Maybe you could still [report your marriage to Japan](https://www.ph.emb-japan.go.jp/files/100324693.pdf)?

I’d suggest contacting the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines and asking them. I wouldn’t try entering Japan on a non-Japanese passport if you are also a Japanese national.

Edit: do you have a Japanese passport?

  3. I think you’re over thinking things.
Register your marriage in Japan. If you and your wife are moving to Japan sponsor her for a spouse of a Japanese national visa.

Your local Japanese embassy/consulate can help you with the marriage notification forms.

    You’ll be fine.
