Is there a luxury countryside escape close to Tokyo?

I’m looking to book my girlfriend a very special spa day close enough where she can train there in the morning or so, and train back later in the day. Her hope is to have a luxury spa day in the countryside.

Is there anything like this? Where do the wealthy in Tokyo visit the countryside?

  1. Hakone, the Izu Peninsula, and Lake Kawaguchi are popular weekend/short stay trips from Tokyo. It’s very popular to stay at a Ryokan for the weekend and then return to Tokyo. The spas, onsen, and facilities available generally offer stunning views.

That said they are all about 2-2.5 hours **one way** from Tokyo Station. Generally people stay overnight, but it’s certainly possibly to do it in one long day if you’re committed.

[Here is a list of publicly available onsen around Fuji Kawaguchiko](https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6902.html) I’m not sure about spa services beyond the public baths, as I’ve not looked into those.

  2. This is definitely not the countryside, but a cool place to check out close to tokyo is Enoshima Island Spa. It is quite unique. They offer they usually spa treatment along with an onsen. But What makes them unique is they have a heated indoor outdoor pool designed to feel like you’re in a cave, it has a great view of Mount Fuji (on a clear day) from the outdoor cave pool. Up elevator on the 2nd floor, they also have an indoor heated pool where after 7 pm (check schedule) they have a laser lightshow.

  3. My friends rented a private onsen hotel in Nagano and enjoyed it very much. It seemed pretty easy to travel to and you can see monkeys there

  4. Tokyo has some amazing luxury spas and hotels. I’d stay in the city and maybe you both venture out to an onsen for a night or two together

  5. Japanese here, and I’d recommend Hakone if you prefer traveling by train.
It’s like 80 mins ride directly from Shinjuku, and you can use luxury train called Odakyu Romance Car.
That said, I would choose to stay there if I were you because Hakone offers lots of things to see.
It’s possible to go back and forth in a day, but it’ll be kinda busy.

(Rich people tend to go to Karuizawa, Hayama, or Nasu afaik, but they go there because they have summer house and cars there. I don’t recommend those for tourists)

  6. I just booked my stay at Gora Kadan in Hakone which is a luxury Ryokan with private open air onsens. I haven’t been yet but all the reviews are amazing.
