Japanese tutor recommendation on iTalki.

I’m curious if anyone uses iTalki for learning Japanese and if so, do you have a particular tutor you’d recommend? I’m still very much a beginner using the Genki books, but I already feel that not having someone to talk with and point out mistakes is a problem.

  1. Italki’s a good platform. There are hundreds on Japanese teachers on there. Since you want someone to help you with grammar, I recommend filtering for professional teachers. Past that, read some profiles, watch intro videos, and book trial lessons to see who you click with

  2. I did a couple genki lessons with a tutor on Italki, it wasn’t worth it enough for me for the price because I already understood the material well enough, but it could be a good idea if you’re struggling. I can look up the name of the person I saw if you want, I feel like she was really good at explaining stuff

  3. Ive worked with my current italki teacher for about a year. Feel free to dm me! I can send you a link!

  4. This is exactly what I do with my teacher on iTalki! I have lessons roughly every week. For me, it really helps to consolidate the material and ask any questions you don’t understand.

One problem I ran into is that everyone seems to be rated 5 stars, so it can be difficult to find a tutor that suits you best. I used a few trial lessons and changed my teacher a few months ago because the previous one wasn’t going at the pace I wanted. I can send you the details of the current teacher I use if you want.

Also, have you heard of BunPro? It’s an online app you can use to supplement your studies. It uses the SRS system like WaniKani (like flashcards basically) to challenge you on grammar points. You can set it by JPLT level or the textbook you use. I find it quite helpful to practice a grammar point using that. There’s also a JET discount if you’re a current JET.

  5. I use Kayo,JLPT!

Been having weekly/bi-weekly lessons for over a year.

She has beginner lessons for Minna No Nihongo. She sent me a PDF of the textbook that we use for N1, so I assume she gives one for all her lessons.

  6. I’ve been learning with two tutors for about 2 years now – I recommend Izumi (いずみ) she also speaks English and Spanish and has been very helpful!

  7. I have lessons with Mari. She knows a lot of English but doesn’t bust it out unless you get really stuck. We went through some JLPT books in order to pass the test, and she also gets me to write a little ‘essay’ each week (what I did during the week, or whatever I want). I think it’s a great platform.
