Visa for dependent sibling

Hey there everyone!

I am seriously thinking about moving to Japan in the near future on a spousal visa.

I’ve been back and forth a few times and just love the country and the opportunities my Japanese partner and I would have.

However, I am wondering about the options for eventually bringing my sister over to Japan. She is physically disabled and currently being taken care of my single parent but I always knew that I may have to become her caregiver. In the future without our parent, she will have no other siblings nor are we in contact with my other parent for more than a decade now.

Currently I am her guarantor both medically and financially.

I’ve read about people bringing over their elderly parents with a little bit of success but in haven’t seen anything about dependent siblings. I would not be eligible for any skilled visas or anything.

I just wanted to know if this is a thing that is possible in Japan with the right lawyer and income to support her.

I would hate to move half way across the world just to uproot everything later without a plan.

Thanks for all your advice.

  2. There isn’t a specific category for this that you could use, so basically you’d be pleading your case to immigration and hoping they agree and give your sibling a designated activities visa.

No one could give you any guarantees, and the argument would be that your sibling has literally no one else who could care for them and are incapable of caring for themselves.
Of course, you’d also need to factor in whether bringing your sister here is a good idea in the first place. All medical care would generally be done in Japanese, all social services would be in Japanese. Any sorts of communities they may want to join would be formed in Japanese. Is your sister prepared to and capable of learning Japanese to a point where she’d be able to interact with medical services?
