Never bought one, because they always seemed so underwhelming. Any recommendations?

I’ve actually never bought one for myself. My wife and I bought some at the children’s section at the department store like Daimaru or Mitsukoshi. It was great value. The down coat that came in one from 2017 is still being used by my daughter and in great condition.
I read from a post earlier that Mister Donut has good lucky bags that are def worth it.
If you have a dedicated cheese shop near you, I find they often do great ones. I know several in Sendai and Morioka.
I think the luckiest bag from Krispy Kreme would be an empty one.
