How can i get someones death certificate?

Please feel free to redirect me to another sub if this doesn’t belong here. I’ll try to make it short but you can check my post history if you need more context i guess.

Basically something really bad happened to my girlfriend (Japanese) some time ago. We got told a few months ago that the person that did it (also Japanese) died. We got told a few different stories of his death, which leads to my girlfriend thinking they lied to her. I don’t think they lied to us but she is obviously worried. I was wondering if there’s a way we can find someones death certificate if they’re not related to us? I tried to search on the internet but couldn’t find anything.

We both live in Japan 50% of the time, in case that’s important

  1. If the person died at the city of his permanent residence, the city office will keep records for a month, then transfer documents over to the legal affairs bureau in the same city. If they died in another city, that city will hold documents for a year, then transfer it.

She also needs to be related or be a beneficiary to do this. Unless you have a compelling reason, that sort of private info is hard, but not impossible to access.

Might be a coincidence, I just helped a buddy with the same problem this week.

  2. I would also REALLY like to know this information. I am
in line to gain something valuable upon a certain person’s death (Japanese) but want it to go through the courts, I am no contact with the family for my personal safety. It would be fantastic if I can occasionally check records to see if they’re dead yet and I can start proceedings! 🙂
