What’s going to happen when you renounce your Japanese citizenship years after you obtained US citizenship?

I was a naturalized Japanese citizen. Move to US years ago and became a US citizen almost a decade back. I knew Japan doesn’t allow dual citizenship but I never bothered to look up and see what I need to do to officially renounce my Japanese citizenship.

Recently I was checking Japanese embassy’s website to find out some info about Nenkin. I saw that if a Japanese citizen decides to give up citizenship, it needs to be done within 3 months of obtaining another citizenship.

I never used my Japanese passport after I got the US one so there wasn’t anything unlawful. I just wonder if there is any potential negative impact at all for being 10 years late to renouncing my Japanese citizenship?

  1. How would the japanese government know you even have other citizenships?

A lot of people aren’t allowed two, but have two.

  2. Keep that baby handy. As a US citizen living in Japan I wish I had PR because the way the United States is heading I don’t want to move back.

I get so many benefits for having a kid here it’s crazy. What does the US provide? Nothing at all. My son get free daycare paid for, medical, a monthly stipend till he is 16-ish.

  3. You’ve technically already lost your Japanese citizenship according to article 11 of the nationality law, however, you are still required to declare. Since giving it up is part of your plan already, you really don’t have anything to worry about.

Your case, acquiring a second citizenship outside of jus solis (which has stipulations according to article 12) or jus sanguinis, is the only time the government has stepped in and stripped Japanese citizenship away from an individual. You’d have to be an elected official in the foreign country you acquired a second citizenship from or just being extremely careless upon immigration to Japan for anyone to “catch” you, though. IANAL, YMMV.

  4. there no way they can know unless you sent a notice to them. use a valid japanese passport to enter japan and to be there or use the us one in the us. or just use one when taveling to both. you figure it out, just dont go saying something stupid. this is a no brainer for those who have dual passports. no 2 government agency has the refresh button to see your status on the other side. That’s why some countries just allow dual or even multiple citizenships.
