What are my chances in getting into a t10 university in Japan (english program, undergrad)?

here are my stats:

GPA: 4.0
IELTS: 7.5
SAT: 1400
JLPT: Passed N5

I had also participated/won international and national competitions + been part of our math varsity team & a journalist for our school’s publication, the club i’m in also is currently having us program a game for a project

What do Japanese universities put emphasis on though since the SAT would be the main exam they would be looking for (i heard that japanese universities evaluate heavily based on exam scores)?

  2. Woahh you got a perfect GPA???
I’d say it depends on which faculty you’re applying to.
STEM majors tend to be a lot more competitive than say social sciences and would require a much better SAT score.
I suggest you to focus on what you can control at this point in time like your essays, instead of worrying about the outcome which is outside your control. 🤗

  3. I know you didn’t ask, but I feel obligated to give a head’s up: English-taught degree programs in Japan are not regarded to be of the best quality, regardless of the university you attend. English-taught programs are not particularly rigorous or well-administered in Japan. I understand that with your current Japanese language level that you don’t have a choice if you want to study and earn a degree in Japan, but please consider it. With a perfect GPA and competitive SAT, there’s a lot of other places you could go and study in English where you would get a lot more out of the degree program.

If you do not intend to stay in Japan long-term afterward, then even if you go to a top 10 university the name recognition and prestige likely won’t transfer much overseas. If you do intend to stay in Japan long-term afterward, then you will really need to focus on getting at least N2 level Japanese with the certificate to prove it. Getting a job in Japan without at least N2 is extremely difficult. Japanese language classes at universities can be hit or miss, as opposed to a dedicated language school as well.

I am speaking from experience so you understand what you’re signing up for. I wish you the best of luck with the rest!

  4. Might as well go to community college in the states, you will get a better education than any English program in Japan.
