Cracked my screen, not tech savy.

So, I dropped my iPad mini on the way to the station this morning. The iPad is about 3 years old. It’s starting to seem slow and the battery is not great anymore, so seeing as I am the least tech savy person ever…..

What would you do?

I’ve never shattered a screen before. Is it worth trying to get the screen repaired? (Found some links of Tokyo cheapo as to where but would be happier for recommendations)

Do I get a second hand replacement (if so could you recommend where to go and buy one?)

Or bite the bullet and get a new one now?

Having looked at the D.I.Y options I’m pretty freaked out I’m going to mess that up, and I can’t find where/how much to buy a screen anyway. So that doesn’t seem like a thing I could do? (Or should I try?)

Tia for any assistance with any of the points. I tried searching around Reddit but didn’t find much.

  1. Repair is usually cheaper than buying a new one. If you want a secondhand one, go to one of those secondhand electronic stores e.g. backmarket, janpara, iosys, sofmap. Or you can always get new one at the apple store. It really fepends how kuch you’re willing to spend and what you would need it for. If yours is 3 years old too, get one of those on the m1 chip and performance is lightyears away from the old processor.

  2. How shattered is the screen? Cuz if it’s badly shattered, I wouldn’t replace the display because tablet displays cost a lot of money to replace (because of parts and labour), and DIY is not much fun even if you have experience (and the display still costs a lot). If it was your phone it would be a different story.

Edit: to answer your answer short, if it’s properly shattered, I would probably get another tablet, but a used one in decent shape to not have to spend too much replacing it

  3. if you’re looking for second hand, there are plenty of affordable used ipads in janpara.
you can either visit their shops or order online. I’ve been using their devices since I came to Japan and there are no problems at all.

  4. I would first go to the Apple Store and have them look at it. Find out how much the screen replacement is, how much battery is left, and have them see if anything else is wrong. You will get a quote from Apple using all of the official parts and labor. It will probably be expensive but if you want the job done right better to go to the people that make it.

That being said your iPad mini is probably the 2019 model, that’s coming up on 5 years on a device that didn’t use top end parts when it was new. If you can afford 70,000 yen I would seriously look into a new mini or even air at this point.
