Running in circles setting up Ahamo

So, did the ahamo application for an e-sim then got the “you have to register for d card” at the last screen…

That’s where I’m failing, being asked my mobile number (which I obviously don’t have). So, is there a trick I missed, do I really need to set up this point card thing?

Can I go to a physical shop to sort things out?

  1. I did the method others here suggested

I made an appointment at a Docomo shop, asked to get the cheapest sim they had (I explicitly told the staff I would switch to ahamo when I get home, and they agreed that was a good method). They set me up with some <1000 yen sim and a docomo ID. When I got home I transferred on the ahamo site in about 5 mins and all is working well

  2. You can make an appointment and set up “irumo” in store which is their cheapest plan, then go home and using the ID they create for you, change the contract to ahamo. You won’t get double billed for the month.

Honestly the system is absolute shite and it’s ridiculous that it takes 30 minutes even for the shop staff to open an account.

Take your passport – they demand to see it even though you don’t have to online. Don’t ask, not worth getting grumpy about.

  3. Fun fact: if you go to a physical store and sign up that way, you can sometimes take advantage of promos like cashback or very cheap lease (iPhone, high-end Android) or purchase (low-end Android, sometimes iPhone SE can be had for a third of retail price or less) promos. As the others said you’ll be signed up with either irumo or eximo temporarily, then just go on the ahamo site and switch.
