50% Shinkansen Discount: am I missing something?

Edit: Resolved: I misread the wording. Thought it meant “limited time” in terms of the time before departure, and not “limited time” as in a specific campaign period. Not sure why they list special prices they’re not currently offering, but hey, guess it’s my bad for not reading the fine print carefully enough.

Original post below:

Found this information about [えきねっとトクだ値](https://www.eki-net.com/top/tokudane/), which claims I can get 50% off tickets if I purchase up to 20 days before departure, but when I go to make the reservation I only see a maximum of 30% off. I can read Japanese, but this still isn’t adding up: am I missing some terms or conditions or something? Route is Kanazawa –> Ueno by Kayagaki. Anyone successfully purchased the 50% off ticket?

  1. > I can read Japanese

Then surely you saw the “通年設定はございません。設定するきっぷの詳細は、決まり次第えきねっとホームページにてお知らせします。” which indicates it’s limited to certain routes/times. There’s only like two terms and conditions in that box and that’s one of them.

  2. The 50% off discount is currently only available for 4 trips on very specific trains with limited seats per train. The beginning and end stations for your trip are not one of those 4 stops (you’re trying to go the reverse trip and end in Ueno rather than Tokyo Station). You’ll need to start and end at the right station in the right direction and not all the trains going between are that specific train group AND it needs to have open seats at that fare on that train available.

    Tokyo → Shin-Hakodate Hokuto
    (Regular price) 23,230 yen
    When riding “Hayabusa”

    Tokyo → Sendai
    (Regular price) 10,890 yen
    When riding “Yamabiko”

    Tokyo → Niigata
    (Regular price) 10,560 yen
    When riding “Toki”

    Tokyo → Kanazawa
    (Regular price) 14,180 yen
    When riding “Kagayaki/Hakutaka”

  3. I was looking at some stuff form ueno, turned out I needed to book for trains from Tokyo for the thing to kick in. Tho even then the 50% off seats were all gone already so I don’t know how much is available

  4. The 50% discount ticket for Shinkansen is called お先にとくだ値スペシャル and rarely on sale.

But if you see the website often, you can find it. I once went from Sendai to Ueno with 50% discount. Proof below.

Incidentally, Ekinet offers discount not only Shinkansen but also other limited express trains in JR East and Hokkaido routes. I also took limited express trains in Hokkaido with 40% or so discount.
