→Osaka
It seems there is some nightclubs around the Shijo Bridge, on Gion.
Not really a lot of lively nightlife spots in Kyoto. Zaza pub used to be a popular spot to drink, then for clubs maybe World, Kitsune, or Chambers.
As others have already said, Osaka is much better for nightlife and just a close train ride away. Might require staying out until the first train in the morning though.
im exactly in the same situation.
There is this awesome hidden bar that’s only lit by candlelight. It was a super chill bar and I met some cool people. The owner was cool as well. The bar has no name and no signs.
Bee’s knee’s is a great speak easy with legit cocktails. Staff always seem friendly.
Kyoto is more of a bar than a club scene. Nobody mentioned Metro so I’ll give it a shout out. Most of the action is on Kiyamachi street, between Kamo river and Kawaramachi (the main shopping drag). Osaka would be a lot better if you want music and dancing. You’d have to catch the first train back though.
Couple of good live houses near Gion if you’re into rock music
There’s a road called Kiyamachi between the river and Kawaramachi. Kiyamachi south of Sanjo and north of Shijo is the main nightlife area. There’s a bar called ING that opens at 8, Zaza’s is over that way, and you can always buy a can of beer and hang out riverside, tons of people do that.
A little too touristy perhaps (maybe not now) but L’Escamotour is an amazing bar to visit. English friendly too. Literally a magical place.

Highly atmospheric night-time stroll.
