Has anyone tried applying for JAL credit card to get miles? Is it an easy credit card to get?

I am thinking of applying for another credit card to collect miles. I’ve had a credit card for years since I was a student here, I heard it is easier to get a CC if you already have one.

Does anyone have any experience with this particular CC? How did you apply (online/in person) and how was the process?

Thank you.

  1. Unless you’re spending millions of yen each year on the card don’t be excited with the mileage opportunities. The free or low-fee cards only give you 1 mile every 200 yen and expire after a few years.

  2. don’t have a JAL one but do have an ANA one, applied online and got it. Rewards are probably worse than with a US card but I get enough miles to get a _lot_ of free domestic flights (disclaimer: big spender)

JAL is probably better than ANA if you want to work towards int’l flights though, international flight awards booking with ANA is totally messed up and almost impossible to get.

  3. Unless you have bad credit history like being late in payment of other CCs, unless you are unemployed, you can get CC like JAL card easily.

  4. Are you still a student? JAL navi student card is an incredible value and is pretty easy to get. The adult card, not so much.

  5. I have the JAL global club Gold Visa card and applied through the mail on one of those application forms. I already had status with JAL, which helped push the application process along. As long as you are employed, it is a pretty painless process.

I used this card for most of my business and home utility expenses and racked up a good amount of miles each month and in turn, used those miles to get bumped into business class many times. You can also use this JGC credit card version to zip through the JAL security area as they have a special area for that, at least domestically.

The 17,600 yen annual fee is waived by using your miles (17,500) every year, just need to apply I believe by March or April. Had the card since 2015, never paid the annual fee once.
