Leaving Japan

Hey guys. My time in Japan is coming to a close and I’m just receiving the information for my return trip. I’m planning on staying a bit after JET to travel but am curious how things will play out considering I have move out of my apartment and will no longer have residency status.

Can anyone share their experience?

Thank you!!!

  1. I’ve moved back and forth a few times.

Make sure you have a list of all the things you’ll need to cancel and do – it’s really easy to forget things. *Especially* don’t forget to go to city hall and notify them, if you forget this step it’s a pain in the ass if you ever move back.

You are able to switch your visa to a tourist one, which will allow you to stay in Japan for 90 days afterwards. It shouldn’t be a problem.

  2. I haven’t left yet but got some info from my BOE for leavers.

    1) You’ll need to notify basically everyone about your intent to leave. This means your real estate agent, utilities, phone, Internet, and city hall.

    2) Deal with your car if you have one.

    3) Change your visa to a tourist one (apply 2-4 weeks before your work visa expires).

    4) Prepare all the documents and things you need for your pension refund.

Those are the big things that my BOE told us about. I intend to ship some personal belongings home and then probably keep one bag with a friend who is staying in Japan. Then I will carry my last bag with me as I travel around a bit before returning to Tokyo for my flight out.
