๐Ÿฟ hive-mind insights ask ๐ŸŽฅ

Hey yโ€™all – my wife and I moved to Japan this past spring and Iโ€™m not sure how best to approach our media accounts.

My question to yโ€™all is this – is there an easy way to consolidate purchased Apple and Google Play movies and TV from our US account to a new fresh Japan accounts? Is this even possible?

Our setup is a Sony Bravia with Google TV as our primary viewing platform.

Any advice about how youโ€™ve structured your purchased media accounts would be appreciated.

  1. Simple answer? You don’t.

Who the heck buys movies from Google Play of all places?

But yeah, all that stuff is region locked, nothing is preventing you from logging into your USA account but I’m going to guess even if you do, accessing it from Japan isn’t going to work.

  2. I can speak for Apple.

Youโ€™ll want to make a separate account for Japan. The reason for this is because there are lots of apps that you use (bank accounts, etc) from the US that are not available in the app store here, and vice versa. If you want to avoid changing regions every time there is an app update (itโ€™s a huge PITA), you can simple log out of your US Apple account and log into the Japanese one.

This applies to your purchases as well. You log into the US account, download everything onto your devices, and then switch over to the Japan account for whatever you need; your US purchases will still be available for your entertainment.

  3. I have a US apple account and use that mostly (I also have a Japanese one – you just need a local credit card). Netflix is worldwide.

Getting a vpn is extremely useful (you don’t need it for apple) for streaming all things US. the only one that has worked well consistently well for digital content is Express.

  4. Google play works fine in Japan. I rent and buy stuff with my US account all the time. I do have a Google Jp account that I rarely use but I have it in case an app is restricted to a country.
