Paying for phone contract and japanese credit score

I have a docomo phone carrier contract and I started to pay for that and the device in installments (24 months) with my EU credit card. Will this positively affect my japanese credit score? I can’t pass the screening even though I hold japanese nationality and work here. Both Rakuten and EPOS denied me. So I was wondering if having a phone contract but paying with foreign card will help in any way.

  1. From what I was told by my friend your payments for cellphones doesn’t impact your score as they are not connected. I’m not certain about this myself mind you.

I did recently manage to get approved for a Rakuten credit card. And it seems your income is a factor for approval. And supposedly they won’t approve you until you’ve been here for about a year.

However some people have gotten approved within a week of arriving. So it’s really hard to say what the requirements are.

Other ones you can try are Amazon and Line (they have credit cards).

Alternatively, you could get a credit card with an fee for the time being to build up your credit. Then try again in about 6 months for The free ones.

I have also been told it can be easier to obtain one in person. But I haven’t tried this myself.

For my own input since I got Rakuten’s CC, I applied for the easiest one. I have been here for many years, so that may of been a factor for approval since I never applied before.

I’d also applied to EPOS and was rejected. Supposedly getting that first one can be the hardest for many people. And finding out the reason isn’t possible.

But I hope you manage to get one. Good luck.

  2. One advice is to wait a few months (6 months) after getting denied before applying for the next card.

  3. I got accepted for an epos card after living in Japan as a foreigner for only a few months. The trick was I was accosted by a worker in a shopping mall. They promised me a 2000 yen discount if I followed them and signed up.

I spoke enough Japanese to understand and enter the information and she helped me work through the process.
They handed it over to me that same day with a 100,000 limit. I’ve had it increased now.
