Looking for Tanabata festival + yukata recommendations

Hi all! I’m trying to plan a small solo trip for myself next summer (or the summer after that) and my goal is to go to a beautiful **Tanabata festival**. It’s my dream! Although I’ve travelled to Japan many times, I’ve never been to any festivals and I’d love to hear recommendations from those who maybe have gone!

I do have a few things I’m looking for, and my Japanese isn’t great but I’ve tried to do my own research too, so I’m sure there’s more out there.

To start, I currently have Kawagoe Hikawa Tanabata and Kifune Tanabata in mind as first choices. Kyo no Tanabata is also on my considerations list. Has anyone ever been, or do you have suggestions for other places?

Here are my criteria otherwise:

\- **Beautiful scenery or location in general, but especially at night.** I’d prefer if the location wasn’t in the heart of the city (surrounded by skyscrapers/shops/etc. Maybe at a shrine, etc) but if it’s exceptionally nice I’m open to considering it. I’m also hoping that I could enjoy myself more in a slightly quieter area.

\- **Yukata??!** Are there any festivals with yukata rentals (where they can help you put it on as well) and let you walk around the festival in them?! Something like all those kimono rentals in Tokyo and Kyoto… Or vice versa, any yukata rentals that are close to a festival that meets my first criteria?

\- Festival activities: any with nice food stalls, games, etc? I’d love to try out that “night market” type vibe as well, but this one isn’t as important as the first criteria.

Thank you so so much!!
