Hopefully future English teacher asks

こんにちは! I live in GB and I can’t stand it here anymore, this is a general topic but if you’re an English teacher in Japan, what qualifications would you accumulate prior to moving to Japan? I have three years before I ideally move, I don’t have any teaching qualifications yet but obviously Japanese to English will be something I’m fairly adept at, any videos, sources or tips, say hi! ありがとう and so on!

This will be a lot less useful than you’d think.

  3. English teachers and English “teachers” are two different jobs. If you want the real one ask yourself “Can I get that job in my home nation right now?” If the answer is no, you don’t have a chance.

English “teaching” on the other hand is a minimum wage job pretending to be a teacher. There are no requirements other than “be able to get a visa”. This leads to lots of issues and the wages being so low. Not joking, spouses from India who never went to school get hired for these jobs.

  4. For an ALT role all you need is the visa, and often a degree to get that visa.

If you want to looking into your licence or international school later down the line you might need your masters or a PGCE. No harm in getting more teaching bits under your belt.
