Hello! I am leaving the JET Program this year, and as the title suggests, I have a question about upgrading my return flight ticket.
I get my flight ticket price reimbursed by my BOE and I’ve already bought the ticket and submitted the receipt for reimbursement. I know that my BOE won’t pay for anything but a basic economy ticket, but I was wondering if it would be alright to upgrade my ticket on my own dime.
I also know it’s usually frowned upon to upgrade your flight ticket TO Japan as it’s arranged by the consulate but I couldn’t find any info on the subreddit about upgrading your flight FROM Japan.
Any advice is appreciated!

Once you’re reimbursed just contact the airline and see if you can pay to upgrade?
Shouldn’t this be a question you ask your BOE? Every BOE is different.
I did this on my return flight. It was easy to do on United’s website and I paid for the upgrade using miles.
